Good morning. It's Thursday, August 7th, 2026. Here's what's happening in tech, space, and AI.

**Story one. Terafab is real โ€” and it's getting built.** Tesla and SpaceX formally announced yesterday that their joint semiconductor mega-factory, Terafab, will rise in Grimes County, Texas, just north of Houston. Initial investment: sixteen point eight billion dollars. The facility will span more than 100 million square feet and create at least 3,000 jobs. Elon Musk and Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the site in a joint announcement. Musk called it "the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far." The fab is aimed at producing custom AI chips and memory for both companies' next-generation aerospace and connectivity workloads โ€” a direct play to secure in-house silicon capacity as global demand for specialized compute outstrips supply. This is vertical integration at planetary scale: rockets, satellites, robots, and now the chips that run them all under one roof.

**Story two. The Google AI org is undergoing its biggest reshuffle ever.** Jeff Dean โ€” employee number 30, 27 years at Google, chief scientist โ€” is leaving to co-found a startup called Discovery Loop, alongside three other DeepMind veterans: Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. Their goal: automating the experimental loops of machine learning, science, and engineering. Google is backing Discovery Loop as an investor and cloud partner. In the same announcement, Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day DeepMind leadership to become Chair, while Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over as SVP. Alphabet stock dropped four to five percent on the news. This is the most significant AI leadership change of the decade โ€” and it happens just as Google admits it's behind on agentic coding and scrambling to catch Gemini 4 out of delayed pre-training.

**Story three. Spacewalk 96 completed at the ISS.** NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Anil Menon finished a six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk Thursday morning โ€” Meir's sixth, Menon's first โ€” installing mounting hardware to prepare the station's 3B power channel for future roll-out solar arrays. This is the 96th U.S. spacewalk and the 281st in ISS history. Meanwhile, the Canadarm2 robotic arm is back to full health after its wrist joint replacement last month, and Canada's MDA Space is pushing to repurpose Canadarm3 technologies for the Artemis lunar logistics program.

**Story four. Asteroids as Mars hardware stores.** A new analysis published today suggests metal-rich asteroids could serve as in-space supply depots for a future Mars colony โ€” providing structural steel, aluminum, and iron without the enormous cost of hauling everything from Earth. Some asteroids could even provide the raw ingredients for rocket fuel production in space. The study shows that carefully selected near-Earth asteroids are reachable with current spacecraft technology. It's a compelling answer to one of the hardest questions in space colonization: once you get there, how do you stay?

**Story five. The FCC's robotics ban is becoming AI industrial policy.** MIT Technology Review published an analysis this week arguing that the FCC's ban on foreign-made humanoid robots โ€” which also now covers robot vacuums, lawnmowers, and delivery bots โ€” is effectively America's first comprehensive AI hardware industrial policy. The ban targets foreign-made robots from all manufacturers โ€” China, South Korea, and beyond โ€” including brands like Roborock, Samsung, and Dreame, and comes as China shipped over 13,000 humanoid robots in 2025 alone. The review notes this makes a fragile, nascent robotics sector a direct target of trade policy โ€” with real consequences for U.S. automation plans that depend on affordable imported hardware.
