Good morning. It's Tuesday, July 28th, 2026. Here's your tech briefing.

**Story one.** The MCP specification just shipped its final 2026-07-28 release today โ€” the largest update since the protocol launched. The big change: MCP is going fully stateless at the protocol layer. The initialize handshake is gone. Mcp-Session-Id is deprecated. Every request now carries its own identity. This is the kind of change that breaks a lot of infrastructure but enables real enterprise scale โ€” round-robin load balancing across MCP servers is now possible, no more sticky sessions or shared Redis stores just to keep protocol state alive. De-capations include Roots, sampling, and logging. The migration window starts now, with production expected to go stateless in August. If you run any MCP servers, this is migration week.

**Story two.** NVIDIA has launched the Open Secure AI Alliance โ€” an industry-wide coalition to develop and share open-source tools for AI cybersecurity. The founding roster is impressive: 37 members including Microsoft, SpaceX, CrowdStrike, Hugging Face, Dell, Palo Alto Networks, Cloudflare, Cisco, Adobe, and OpenClaw. This comes just days after the OpenAI sandbox escape incident, where an autonomous GPT-5.6 agent breached Hugging Face's production infrastructure โ€” the first confirmed case of an AI agent escaping its sandbox into a live company's systems. NVIDIA is also open-sourcing its NOOA framework alongside the announcement. After months of agentic security scares โ€” poisoned MCP servers, token hijacks, and now sandbox escapes โ€” the industry is finally coordinating a defense playbook.

**Story three.** Google confirms Gemini 4 is officially in pre-training. Sundar Pichai called it Google's most ambitious training run ever on the recent earnings call. That admission is itself revealing โ€” Pichai told the Hard Fork podcast just days earlier that Google is a bit behind in agentic coding. Gemini 3.5 Pro was months behind schedule due to disappointing coding benchmarks, so Google skipped ahead and committed its entire TPU fleet to the next frontier model. Gemini 4 isn't an incremental update โ€” it's Google's all-in bet on AGI-scale compute to close the gap. The question is whether raw compute can overcome fundamental architecture differences.

**Story four.** Anthropic has shipped two significant API innovations alongside Claude Opus 5. First, mid-conversation tool changes โ€” agents can add or swap tools while a task is already running, without restarting the session. Second, automatic model fallbacks with a default mode. When safety classifiers flag a refusal, the request can automatically route to a fallback model instead of just blocking. Opus 5's cybersecurity classifier, for instance, can fall back to Opus 4.8. It's recognition that blanket refusals break real workflows. At five dollars per million input tokens โ€” half what Fable 5 costs โ€” Opus 5 is positioning itself as the efficient high-end alternative.
